From the Viticulturist: Cutting Back on our Spring Work

Hello, All,

During the months of February and March a big change happened in the vineyard! We pruned all of our vines in the cold. Why? Though it may seem like cutting back a large amount of our vines would be bad during this time, it actually encourages growth for the next year and allows us to re-train vines that didn’t grow the way we wanted them to last year. We had to wear some pretty warm clothes, but all was finished ahead of schedule.

Now that it is warmer, we are starting to go back through for a second check of our work. Plastic green ties (pictured above) help hold up our vines and we are checking to make sure they are not broken or choking off part of a vine.

We are all looking forward to the buds starting to show signs of growth. Rest assured, you will see the fruits of our labor should the next week stay nice. 🙂
